The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) awarded SMC a $446,603 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant to restore sections of Bull Creek east of Sheridan Road in Beach Park. The USEPA grant will be used in addition to a previous grant award from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) to complete the project construction.
This project was made possible by the support of property owners along this section of Bull Creek setting a portion of their properties into a Conservation or Drainage easement. Eighty percent (80%) of the easement area is on private property with No Public Access available.
The project work consists of the restoration and enhancement of Bull Creek within the reach between Sheridan Road and the Union Pacific Railroad and includes:
Project work will also require preparing the site by clearing scrub and limited tree removal; the installation of temporary construction access routes and stream crossings; and the installation of temporary soil erosion and sediment control practices. Upon completion, the project will provide a long-term solution to the stream downcutting and widening and streambank erosion that is occurring within the project work areas.
Copenhaver Construction is the contractor. Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
