- The Chief County Assessment Office is the coordinating arm for all tax assessment activity for Lake County's 280,210 real estate parcels.
- This office is also where the Lake County Board of Review conducts the assessment appeal process, with the CCAO staff serving as the support for the Board’s work.
- Determines the equalization factors for each township.
- Mails assessment notices to all taxpayers annually.
- Processes all homestead exemption applications.
- Once the Chief County Assessment Office and the Lake County Board of Review have completed their work for a given tax year, the assessment rolls are turned over to the County Clerk's Office for the calculation of the tax rates for each individual parcel.
After the Board of Review completes their work reviewing assessment appeals, the County Clerk's office performs a series of calculations to create the tax bill. Our tax extension department staff calculate the proportionate share of your total tax bill that each local unit of government will receive.
The Treasurer is responsible for depositing, investing and distributing monies on behalf of Lake County. The Treasurer is also the County Collector who bills and collects real estate taxes.
The Collector sends out over 260,000 tax bills yearly, while collecting over 1.8 billion dollars and distributing that collection to over 350 taxing districts in a timely manner.
In addition, the staff collects Mobile Home bills, Inheritance Tax, works with many seniors on the tax deferral program and holds the annual tax sale.
