Inmate Classification

During the Booking process, inmates are asked a series of questions to identify mental and physical health conditions, substance abuse issues, an assessment of charges present and past, current employment and gang affiliation to name a few. Classification retrieves the information from booking and conducts interviews with each inmate. Classification assesses each inmate based on factors including gender, age, size, mental and physical health, offense, prior incarcerations, gang affiliation, etc. and assigns housing accordingly.

Once an inmate is housed, he/she is provided the inmate rules and regulations and instructions on accessing medical treatment, PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) awareness, commissary, phone, visitation, as well as educational programming and inmate worker opportunities, to name a few.

Housing units in the jail are gender separate and include a medical unit, low security dormitories, higher security pods, and an administrative segregation pod. Immense emphasis is placed on the role of classification to ensure the safety and well-being of the inmates as well as the staff.
