  Characteristics of Offenders 

  1. Has a history of violence in family;

  2. Abuses drugs and/or alcohol;

  3. Discounts feelings of others;

  4. Defends self, projects blame and responsibility;

  5. Lies and manipulates;

  6. Is aggressive;

  7. Has power and control needs;

  8. Acts possessively;

  9. Is dependent;

  10. Has difficulty establishing and maintaining relationships;

  11. Is rigid regarding role differentiation;

  12. Is selfish and narcissistic.
Not all potential abusers share all of these traits. Many individuals who possess a number of these characteristics do not become abusers. It is important to remember that abusers do tend to exhibit these characteristics
