Watershed-Based Planning Process
SMC and the Lake County Board formally adopted the original Fish Lake Drain Plan in 2004. In 2003, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued guidance for developing ”watershed-based plans” or WBPs. To be considered a WBP, a watershed plan must incorporate nine (9) plan elements specified by the USEPA. Having a watershed-based plan will allow us to access Section 319 grant funding for environmental restoration projects recommended in the watershed plan. In late 2004, SMC applied for and was successful in obtaining funding through the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to upgrade the Fish Lake Drain Plan to meet the WBP requirements. SMC worked with Conservation Design Forum, the authors of the original Fish Lake Drain plan assisted in the 2009 upgrade. For more information, contact Patty Werner, 847.918.5269.
