Significant progress continues on the Lake Michigan Water project. Lake Michigan water has been provided to the Village of Lindenhurst and the unincorporated areas of Grandwood Park. Service will soon be provided to the unincorporated area of Fox Lake Hills as well as the Village of Lake Villa.
Construction of the water distribution mains is being completed in four sections. The final 2 phases are underway in Fox Lake HIlls. More detailed updates can be found here.
Property tax bills now include the SSA tax to fund construction costs, which will continue to be assessed for 25 to 30 years until the bonds for this project are paid off. An SSA is the most appropriate and only funding mechanism that can be used to sell bonds of this magnitude. Using the value of your home to determine your share of the tax burden is the mechanism for funding other services rendered to properties, such as fire protection, police protection, parks, schools, etc. Therefore, if your house is valued higher than your neighbor, you will be assessed a higher SSA tax.
The affected communities faced an uncertain future with regard to water supply. Before this project, our local water supply came from underground aquifers. Growing demand depleted the deep aquifer and shallow aquifers were being pumped at capacity, which created low water levels and poor water quality.
